Counselling and psychotherapy are ways of making conversation which are helpfully different from everyday talking.
Counselling is private and (within certain limits which will be explained to you by your counsellor) confidential
The Counsellor will be very interested in you and what you want and what is important to you, and will not say very much about themselves
The counsellor will be mostly neutral and non-judgmental about the things you tell them
Initially you willl probably experience a chance to unburden yourself or "offload"
The counsellor will help you explore what you want from your meetings, and will encourage you to say how the meetings are going and to adjust your aims as you wish.
The counsellor will discuss with you where else you may need to go if your therapy is not doing all that you wished it to do. This might include referral on to a different sort of therapeutic service.
Counsellors and psychotherapists come in many varieties and each one brings a different set of assumptions about people to their work. You should ask any counsellor or psychotherapist that you meet to give an account of how they work; and "shop around" if necessary to find a therapist who suits you.
